LOWER MERION — WomenHeart: The National Coalition for Women with Heart Disease announced that Maribel Hernandez, MD, esteemed cardiologist and Medical Director of the Women’s Heart Initiative at Main Line Health, has been selected to receive the prestigious 2024 Wenger Award for Excellence in Clinical Practice. The award ceremony will take place on Monday, June 10, 2024, at the Hotel Washington in Washington, DC.

Dr. Hernandez is being honored for her unwavering dedication to improving the lives of women living with or at risk of heart disease. Her exemplary clinical practice and innovative leadership have had a profound impact on countless individuals, setting a new standard for women’s heart health.

Serving as a cardiologist for 30 years and on the medical staff of Main Line Health for over 20 years, Dr. Hernández specializes in managing patients with heart rhythm disorders. She has been an advocate for a future that includes earlier detection of heart disease in women and women-centric research to help improve treatments and outcomes. Dr. Hernandez has participated in clinical research that has led to the approval of new technologies as well as in the development of new clinical guidelines for their use.

Under Dr. Hernandez’s leadership, the Women’s Heart Initiative at Main Line Health has made significant strides in enhancing the collaboration between obstetricians/gynecologists, primary care physicians, and cardiologists. This integrated approach has vastly improved the identification and management of high-risk women, ensuring they receive the comprehensive care they need. Furthermore, her program’s emphasis on education of health care providers has equipped them with the necessary tools to recognize and address the unique risk factors for heart disease in women, thereby reducing disparities in care.

Dr. Hernandez’s instrumental role in developing “A Woman’s Guide to Protect Her Heart,” an educational guidebook, has empowered women with vital information to make informed decisions about their heart health. Additionally, her initiation of “Heart-to-Heart Conversations,” a monthly cardiac support group for women, has created a crucial platform for mental and emotional support and education.

“For over twenty-five years, WomenHeart has been the leading voice for the millions of women living with or at risk for heart disease,” said Celina E. Gorre, MPH, MPA at WomenHeart. “Dr. Hernandez’s innovative approach and advocacy amplify our mission and move us closer to our goal of improved heart health for all women.”

The annual Wenger Awards is the premier event showcasing individuals who advance the understanding of women’s heart disease. This year’s event will gather influential decision-makers in public policy, science, medical research, and business, alongside our dedicated patient volunteers—women heart disease survivors who work tirelessly in their communities to educate others about heart disease.
