The 9 mm was loaded with 10 bullets when TSA officers detected the firearm Friday morning among the worker’s belongings when he was entering an employee checkpoint on his way to work, the agency added.

Airport police were contacted and responded to the checkpoint where they confiscated the firearm, cited the Philadelphia resident and took possession of his airport identification badge. Without the badge, the man is unable to work at the airport, the TSA said.

“This was a good catch on the part of our TSA officers as it addressed a possible insider threat situation,” explained Gerardo Spero, TSA’s federal security director for the airport. “Individuals who work at the airport, whether they are members of the flight crew, work at retail shops, work for airlines, or are contractors of a company that does business at the airport are not allowed to bring prohibited items onto the secure side of the airport. We are always on alert for employees who may have possible bad intentions, which could possibly represent a threat to aviation security.”

In addition to losing his ID badge, which prevents him from working at the airport, the individual also faces a possible federal financial civil citation, which could cost thousands of dollars, the agency said.

“We are deep into our busy summer travel period, and here at Philadelphia as well as at airports across the country, we are extremely busy and our officers have remained vigilant in focusing on their mission,” Spero said. “We want people to get to their destinations safely and get home safely.”

It was the 17th gun that TSA officers have detected at PHL checkpoints so far this year. In all of 2023, 45 firearms were intercepted at airport checkpoints.

Shooting suspect led police on chases that closed I-95, shot at cops before she was killed in Chester [Updated] https://www.mainlinemedianews.com/2024/05/14/i-95-closed-between-i-476-and-the-commodore-barry/ Tue, 14 May 2024 16:56:36 +0000 https://www.mainlinemedianews.com/?p=342566&preview=true&preview_id=342566 A 23-year-old woman led police on multiple pursuits, stole or carjacked vehicles from residents, shot at police before meeting her end in a hail of bullets from police who converged on the car she had stolen a short time earlier.

The woman’s name was not released, but Wilmington police gave this account of the chaos on Tuesday:

Shortly before noon members of the Wilmington Police Department’s Drug, Organized Crime and Vice Division, Uniformed Services Division and Canine Unit responded to the 300 block of North Madison Street while attempting to apprehend a suspect wanted in a shooting that occurred on Dec. 2 in the 500 block of West Eighth Street.

The suspect, identified as a 23-year-old female, attempted to evade police and rammed multiple marked Wilmington police vehicles before fleeing from police onto I-95 northbound into Pennsylvania.

The suspect vehicle was pursued into Pennsylvania by members of the Wilmington Police Department and the Delaware State Police.

After crossing into Pennsylvania, the suspect crashed her vehicle at the Market Street ramp in Upper Chichester, and subsequently fired at police. Two members of the Delaware State Police discharged their firearms during the exchange.

The suspect subsequently gained access to a sport utility vehicle and drove into Chester, where she crashed into a building.

Following a home invasion, the suspect entered a third vehicle, a red car, and attempted to flee.

At that time, three members of the Wilmington Police Department, five members of the Delaware State Police, a member of the Trainer Police Department and a member of the Chester Police Department discharged their firearms.

The suspect ultimately died in the car, and her identity will be released once family notifications are complete.

One Wilmington police officer was transported to a hospital for evaluation of a minor injury. There are no other known injuries to first responders or members of the public.

This incident is under investigation by the Delaware County District Attorney’s Office.

The Wilmington Police officers who discharged their firearms have been placed on administrative duty pending the investigation, and this incident is being investigated by the WPD Criminal Investigations Division and the Office of Professional Standards.

Chester Police Commissioner Stephen Gretsky said earlier Tuesday that Chester police received an alert tone from dispatch for shots fired, assist officer.

“A vehicle pursuit ensues, which ends here, and crashes here on Kerlin Street,” Gretsky said. “We have an active investigation and we have one deceased female.”

Delaware County detectives are involved in the probe. The county deferred comment to Chester and Delaware State Police.

Here's another piece of the puzzle from the series of events Tuesday that started in Delaware with an episode in Upper Chichester Township and ended in Chester: An overturned GMC vehicle against a home behind 12th and Kerlin streets just off Interstate 95 in Chester. (PETE BANNAN-DAILY TIMES)

One firearm was recovered at the scene, Gretsky said.

Gretsky said that with the majority of pursuits, that suspects are just looking to get off the highway to make an escape.

Fire police closed Interstate 95 between Interstate 476, the Blue Route, and the Commodore Barry Bridge for about three hours.

Delaware County woman rammed police vehicle, led officers on chase on I-95 with son, 8, in car https://www.mainlinemedianews.com/2024/05/03/woman-rammed-police-vehicle-led-officers-on-chase-with-son-8-in-car-prospect-park-pd-says/ Fri, 03 May 2024 18:39:48 +0000 https://www.mainlinemedianews.com/?p=341819&preview=true&preview_id=341819 A Prospect Park woman has been charged with ramming a police vehicle and leading officers into a pursuit onto Interstate 95, all while her 8-year-old son was in the car

Jamie N. Wadsworth, 42, of the 200 block of Mackenzie Avenue, was arrested Thursday night in middle of I-95 south after her car was boxed in by police and the heavy traffic on the highway, according to police.

The boy’s father was summoned to the scene, and the youth was turned over to him.

Wadsworth was arraigned on 17 charges, including felony fleeing police, aggravated assault and endangering the welfare of children. The Pennsylvania courts portal indicates that she was arraigned on the charges, but neither bail nor incarceration information was evident on Friday afternoon.

“I am disgusted by her actions,” says Prospect Park Police Chief David Madonna in an email. “In addition to endangering our officers, she elected to drive in the most reckless of manners with her 8-year-old son in the vehicle.”

Officer Michael C. Slowik’s account of the incident:

He and an Officer Davis attempted to serve a protection-from-abuse order on Wadsworth at her residence about 7:30 p.m. Thursday. They did not make contact with her and were preparing to leave when Wadsworth came barreling down the street.

Slowik said he had to make evasive maneuvers to avoid having his vehicle being struck from behind. Wadsworth passed by and passed Davis’ vehicle.

Wadsworth turned left onto Madison Avenue as officers followed with lights and sirens as Wadsworth ran stop signs all the way to Chester Pike. Once at Chester Pike, she was unable to proceed with another vehicle stopped.

Slowik pulled in behind and Davis in front. Wadsworth “berated” Slowik, saying her husband “is a Pagan and we can’t stop her.” She threw her car into reverse and it rammed Slowik’s vehicle.

She was able to drive away and the chase continued on Chester Pike and Lincoln Avenue before getting onto the interstate “where she was met with heavy traffic conditions.”

“Wadsworth attempted to weave in and out of traffic before being boxed in by police and civilian traffic.”

A struggle to get her out of the car ensued and that’s when police noticed there was a boy in the front seat.

He “was so small his head was unable to crest the window sill of the vehicle and his face (was) directly aligned with the air bags.” The boy’s name is being withheld by the Daily Times.

Wadsworth tried to run but was eventually subdued and taken into custody.

Her vehicle had moderate damage. Slowik’s vehicle also was damaged.

The boy was unharmed, but visibly frightened.

“I am so grateful and proud that our officers were able to stop her in a manner in which no injuries were sustained by her, the child, or the public,” Madonna added. “One officer is experiencing knee pain as a result of the incident.”

State police say Delaware County pursuit ended with multiple dead https://www.mainlinemedianews.com/2024/04/24/police-pursuit-ends-with-apparent-suspect-vehicle-crash-fire-entrapment/ Wed, 24 Apr 2024 17:47:53 +0000 https://www.mainlinemedianews.com/?p=341191&preview=true&preview_id=341191 On Wednesday night, state police acknowledged the pursuit Wednesday that ended with a fatal crash in Upper Chichester Township that killed occupants of the suspect vehicle.

The crash occurred shortly after 1:30 p.m. as troopers were pursuing a car whose driver fled during a traffic stop. In a press release, troopers called that vehicle suspicious, and that there were seven occupants.

Troopers said, “The operator of the vehicle failed to yield to the member’s emergency lights and siren, and a vehicle pursuit ensued. The pursuit ended on Conchester Highway at the Chichester Avenue overpass when the operator of the vehicle became involved in a one-vehicle crash, during which multiple occupants of the fleeing vehicle were killed.”

The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to contact Trooper Eugene Tray at the Philadelphia station at 215-452-5216.

A later post by another emergency services agency suggested more, if not all, of the occupants of the car died.

The police radio traffic on the Southwestern sector of Delaware County communications provided this account Wednesday:

Those officers were advised about 1:30 p.m. Wednesday that troopers were in pursuit of shoplifting suspects in a red Taurus with dark tinted windows on Route 322 at speeds of 100 mph.

The occupants of the vehicle were said to have been involved in a retail theft at Lululemon in Concord Township. The municipal officers said little after being told of the pursuit.

Within moments, the crash was reported at Conchester and Chichester.

First crews on scene reported fire in the engine compartment of a vehicle with five people trapped, and people down on the highway.

“Call Crozer and figure out how many level 1s they can take,” came a call amid heavy fire and EMS radio traffic. Also, that there were five ALS trucks en route.

Further clarification came: Four heavily entrapped with one down on the roadway. Two medical helicopters were asked to fly, then a third.

One DOA was reported at 1:50 p.m. A second DOA reported at 1:57 p.m.

At 2 p.m., only the driver remained entrapped in the car, then the third DOA was reported at 2:05 p.m.

It is unclear how many of the rest of the occupants survived. The radio traffic showed the trauma centers in the area were all put on alert and it is likely the injured were sent to different hospitals.

Township police advised that “(Route) 322 from Chelsea Parkway to Creek will be closed due to a fatal accident. Please try to avoid the area.” At 7:30 Wednesday night that post had not been revised.

George Johnson was working outside his house near the highway and heard the crash.

“We were right here working in the back working on a boat. We heard the cop cars coming down 322. They were coming pretty fast. Then we heard the bang,” Johnson said.

The crash happened on the bridge that goes over Chichester Avenue. It is uncertain if the Ford lost control and struck the bridge abutment or something else caused the crash.

The vehicle ended up in the westbound lane of the highway.

On Wednesday night, the Upper Chichester Fire Department briefly posted this, but then took it down:

At approximately 1:30 p.m. this afternoon, Company 10 was dispatched to the Conchester Highway (322) and Chichester Ave for a vehicle accident with injuries and fire.

Chief and Assistant 10 arrived on scene to find a single vehicle that struck a bridge abutment traveling at a high rate of speed after a police pursuit.

Upon further investigation, crews found 5 occupants heavily entrapped inside of a 4 door sedan with active fire in the engine compartment.

2 additional patients were also found outside of the vehicle.

Due to the large number of patients and conditions on scene an EMS Mass Casualty Incident was declared, bringing multiple ambulances to the scene and several medical helicopters to the Fury Road Field (established as a landing zone).

Rescue 10 and Squad 10 along with the Claymont Fire Company and Aston Twp. Fire Dept worked for over 20 minutes to extricate the occupants and extinguish the fire.

Unfortunately, multiple patients sustained injuries incompatible with life and were pronounced dead on scene. We later learned several of the other occupants were pronounced deceased at area hospitals.

The following agencies were also on scene or assisted. We sincerely appreciate their hard work and support during this challenging incident.

Search efforts over for missing 6-year-old who disappeared into the Chester Creek https://www.mainlinemedianews.com/2024/03/26/search-efforts-end-for-missing-6-year-old-who-disappeared-into-the-chester-creek/ Tue, 26 Mar 2024 19:51:08 +0000 https://www.mainlinemedianews.com/?p=339238&preview=true&preview_id=339238 Chester announced Tuesday that after another unsuccessful day of searching for missing Li’najah Brooker that that was the end of search efforts in Chester Creek.

The city said in a press release: “Having exhausted all available resources to locate Li’najah over the past three-and-a-half days, we are now ceasing search operations. Our hearts, thoughts, and prayers go out to the family during this difficult time.”

The child fell into the swollen creek about 7 p.m. Saturday after heavy rains all day. She was with friends at the water. The circumstances of how it happened remain unclear.

Li'najah Brooker

Mayor Stefan Roots added these comments Tuesday:

“I stand before our community today with a heavy heart. The past days have been filled with intense efforts to locate a missing 6-year-old girl, Li’najah Brooker, who tragically fell into the Chester Creek after heavy rains on Saturday night.

“Our search, rescue, and recovery operations have been exhaustive involving multiple agencies and dedicated individuals committed to bringing her home safely.

“I want to extend my deepest gratitude to all the agencies involved in these efforts. From our local law enforcement, fire departments, emergency medical services, and search and rescue teams.”

Teams were back at the site near Eighth Street on Tuesday with scent dogs after searching Monday with sonar in the area where the girl fell in, and continuing out to the Delaware River.

“Upon completion of the searches, still nothing has been found,” the city added.

The city pointed out that all available resources were deployed during the operations over four days: “These resources have included small and large craft boatteams, dive teams, underwater and aerial drones, sonar devices, security footage, U.S. Coast Guard choppers and scent canines. We are disappointed to report that these efforts have not led to the recovery of Li’najah.”

Numerous fire companies helped on Saturday night after someone reported about 7 p.m. that the 6-year-old fell in the creek, and their search ended about 10:30 p.m., though the Coast Guard search continued through the night.

Boats and drones were involved in the search Sunday, in both directions on Chester Creek and on both sides of the Delaware River where the creek flows into it. By Sunday morning, the operation turned into a recovery, but that has not even occurred.

The fast moving current and the creek’s proximity to the much wider Delaware River was a daunting task for rescue and recovery crews, with leaders acknowledging that the girl might have been swept into the river by the violent current before the search even got started.

Saturday saw as much as 3 inches of rain fall in Delaware County and it was the rainiest March day on record at an official Philadelphia site in 152 years.

Also Tuesday, the Chester Upland School District made grief services to those in the school community who may have been impacted by the tragic event. However, the district said that the child did not attend school in the district.

The district is on spring recess this week, but said that anyone who needs support can use these resources:

Additionally, once students and staff return from Spring Recess on Tuesday, April 2, grief support services will be available at Chester Upland School of the Arts and Chester High School. If additional counseling services are needed, staff and families are encouraged to contact the counselors at each respective school, the district said..

We also encourage parents and caregivers to have open conversations with their children about this tragic event, and to reach out to us for any assistance or support needed, the district said.

'Extremely sad day': Search turns to recovery mode for missing 6-year-old girl swept away by swollen creek https://www.mainlinemedianews.com/2024/03/24/search-resumes-for-missing-6-year-old-chester-girl/ Sun, 24 Mar 2024 15:05:36 +0000 https://www.mainlinemedianews.com/?p=338970&preview=true&preview_id=338970 Chester Fire Commissioner John Shirley said the search for the missing 6-year-old girl who was swept away Saturday night in a swollen Chester Creek moved into a recovery mode with first light Sunday.

Shirley, Mayor Stefan Roots and other officials spoke at a press conference Sunday afternoon regarding the disappearance and likely death of Lin’ajah Brooker.

“Once we had the sunlight on our side we knew it was going to be a recovery and not a rescue,” Shirley said, adding that modeling for such situations shows about a three-hour survivability period.

“We were looking for that miracle,” he added. “We were always hopeful.”

“We’re going to search until it starts to get dark out again,” Shirley said Sunday, adding that it’s a very large area to cover.

He added that with the swift-moving river following the heavy rain Saturday, “She probably would have been at the mouth of the Delaware River in nine minutes. She might have already been in the Delaware when we were getting set up.”

Roots said, “All across the city we are in mourning. … This is an extremely sad day in Chester.”

And, the searching to recover the girl would go on because “It’s really important to find closure here.”

“We’re praying and we appreciate the prayers and support coming from all over the country right now,” he added, saying schools churches and social organizations will band together because “We have a tough community.”

Roots stressed that the city and every municipality needs to provide safe places for children to play, and that parents need to know what their children are doing when playing outside.

There was a discussion about how the girl and her friends got down to the creek side near Eighth Street, whether by a hole in the fence of a nearby playground or another way.

The mayor said it wasn’t yet clear how Brooker and her friends came to be at the creek, but “They were down at the water at the very wrong time.”

The creek was the subject of a flood warning earlier Saturday. The National Weather Service said that creek was going to crest at just over 8 feet — slightly above flood stage — due to the drenching rains much of the first half of the day. That warning expired at 3:15 p.m.

It’s not clear how much the creek level had subsided by 7 p.m.

Charges against ‘Bam’ Margera in Radnor Hotel incident withdrawn https://www.mainlinemedianews.com/2024/03/20/charges-against-bam-margera-withdrawn-in-radnor-hotel-incident/ Wed, 20 Mar 2024 18:42:15 +0000 https://www.mainlinemedianews.com/?p=338806&preview=true&preview_id=338806 Charges of public intoxication and disorderly conduct were withdrawn Wednesday against Brandon “Bam” Margera at the office of District Judge Sloan Walker in Radnor Township over an incident at the Radnor Hotel.

“Justice prevailed today when charges were withdrawn against Mr. Margera,” said his attorneys Michael T. van der Veen and William J. Brennan in a press release. “It’s fulfilling to be able to help him get his life back on track.”

According to a previous Daily Times account:

Police were called to the parking lot of the Radnor Hotel around 3:30 a.m. on Aug. 9 on the report of a male and female causing a disturbance.

Upon arrival, officers made contact with Margera, who appeared intoxicated and was acting disorderly, police said.

Margera was taken into custody for public intoxication and disorderly conduct and taken to the Radnor police station.

He remained at the police station, was issued citations for public intoxication and disorderly conduct, and was later released to a friend.

Both of the charges were summery offenses. The reason for the withdrawal were not explained. The Delaware County District Attorney’s office said it was not involved in the withdrawal of charges.

Margera listed an address in Doylestown on the most recent paperwork.

The former “Jackass” star is scheduled for trial next week in Chester County on the more serious criminal charges that he threatened family members and assaulted his brother in April.

Radnor Middle School Mini-THON raises more than $147,000 https://www.mainlinemedianews.com/2024/03/17/radnor-middle-school-mini-thon-raises-more-than-147000/ Sun, 17 Mar 2024 11:12:14 +0000 https://www.mainlinemedianews.com/?p=338525&preview=true&preview_id=338525 Radnor Township School District said that the middle school’s seventh-annual Mini-THON generated over $147,000.

On March 15 more than 500 students and staff members danced from late afternoon into the night to raise funds for the fight against pediatric cancer, the district said.

Students have been raising funds all school year through various events in support of Four Diamonds Fund at Penn State Hershey Children’s Hospital.

The 2023-24 fundraiser set a new school fundraising record, surpassing the previous mark by over $28,000.

In the seven years that Radnor Middle School has hosted a Mini-THON, the school community has raised over $650,000, the district said.

Because of the steady and generous support of communities like Radnor, Four Diamonds can cover 100% of all medical expenses related to cancer care not covered byinsurance for eligible Four Diamonds children.

Mini-THON is modeled after Penn State’s dance marathon called THON.

Four Diamonds Mini-THONs are leadership opportunities that empower students to learn about event management and philanthropy, Radnor said.
