2 dead, 76-year-old charged after shooting in Chester County [Updated, Map]

EAST MARLBOROUGH —Two people are dead and an elderly township man is in custody Friday in a shooting incident, police say.

The names of the deceased have not been released and an investigation is continuing, according to a news release issued just before 6 a.m. by Pennsylvania State Police.

On Friday afternoon, court records show that Roger Hanks, a retired school teacher and former DuPont employee, was arraigned by Magisterial District Judge Albert Iacocca of Kennett Square on first-degree murder and related charges. He was taken to Chester County Prison, held without bail. A criminal court complaint was not immediately available.

Eerily, the double shooting comes two years to the day of another double homicide in the normally peaceful township where Longwood Gardens is located.

In the release, State Trooper John Pisker said that units from the Avondale barracks were called to an address in the 200 block of Wiltshire Drive for a report of a shooting around 6:15 p.m. on Thursday.

Upon arrival, troopers encountered the suspect, a 76-year-old man, in the garage of the home, which is located about one mile from Unionville High School. The man was taken into custody.

Located inside the home were two victims who suffered fatal gunshot wounds and who were declared dead at the scene.

Pisker said that the investigation is ongoing and that further information would be released as it becomes available. There was no immediate indication that the public was in danger.

Further details will be provided as they are reported.
