Letter: Flawed ‘survey’ on loathed highways unfair to Pennsylvania Turnpike, CEO says https://www.mainlinemedianews.com/2023/11/16/letter-flawed-survey-on-loathed-highways-unfair-to-pennsylvania-turnpike-ceo-says/ Thu, 16 Nov 2023 21:25:48 +0000 https://www.mainlinemedianews.com/?p=327260&preview=true&preview_id=327260 Editor:

Recently this publication gave up valuable column inches to report on a Daytona Beach Volvo dealership “survey” (“Pennsylvania Turnpike ranks among most loathed interstates in the U.S.“)  that, without published methodology, dubbed our roadway “loathsome.”

The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission does significant, legitimate research among our customers. Those studies found that 80 percent of users indicate the PA Turnpike is a convenient way to travel within our state and more than 60 percent of active users who reside in Philadelphia or Pittsburgh gave the PA Turnpike an overall rating of ‘very good’ or ‘excellent.’

We also receive high marks for outpacing national standards for roadway rideability and overall safety. And as we build out the next phase of electronic tolling, which is open road tolling, the chokepoints that customers may now experience will be eliminated.

Conversely, the article included no methodology or information on whether respondents had personally travelled on our roads or how recently and it doesn’t note where respondents lived, or how many respondents answered questions specific to the PA Turnpike. In our attempts to answer these questions with the dealership, we received no response.

We expect this publication to do better by its readers and spend time on stories related to actual issues facing our Commonwealth and leave the ‘clickbait’ behind.

Mark P. ComptonCEO, Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission

Vice President Kamala Harris arrives in Reading https://www.mainlinemedianews.com/2023/09/19/vice-president-kamala-harris-arrives-in-reading/ Tue, 19 Sep 2023 15:50:12 +0000 https://www.mainlinemedianews.com/?p=322551&preview=true&preview_id=322551 Vice President Kamala Harris is visiting Reading Area Community College Tuesday as part of her “Fight for Our Freedoms College Tour.”

Her plane arrived at Reading Regional Airport at 11:43 a.m. Harris, wearing a black pant suit and black high heels, disembarked at 11:53 a.m., greeted by Reading Mayor Eddie Moran. After a short chat and a quick wave to the press, she entered her vehicle and the motorcade began moving at 11:57 a.m.

Harris visited RACC to participate in a moderated afternoon discussion in the Miller Center for the Arts.

She spent about 30 minutes on stage, where she stressed the importance of voting. She spoke in a down-to-earth tone, telling the students that elections matter and that issues like voting rights, the environment and women’s reproductive rights are on the ballot. She  told the crowd that Americans have more in common with each other than they do differences, saying “Our diversity is our strength, our unity is our power. “

Further updates from her visit will be posted as they become available.

The monthlong tour began last week and is scheduled to involve around a dozen schools in at least seven states.

The vice president’s office describes it as an effort to bring students together to support the Biden administration’s positions on reproductive freedom, gun safety laws, climate change, voting rights, LGBTQ+ equality and education. She will also being encouraging them to vote.

Harris’ staff says the visits present an opportunity to highlight the adminstration’s accomplishments, outline the work ahead and hear directly from students.
