Dorothy McIlwaine Kerr OBITUARY
Dorothy McIlwaine Kerr, 102, of Paoli and Gladwyne, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Saturday, April 6, 2024. Dorothy was born on January 22, 1922 in Lurgan, County Armagh, Northern Ireland. She was born with a caring soul, a deep love of literature, a photographic memory, as well as a very quick wit. She was preceded in death by her parents and siblings, as well as her loving husband, the Rev. Norman S. Kerr. She is survived by three sons, Norman (Lynn) of Glendora, NJ, Samuel of Paoli, PA and Michael (Kim) of Richmond, VA. She is also survived by three grandchildren, Matthew, Jared and MacKenzie. She earned her Bachelor of Arts degree from Queen’s University in Belfast, with honors, and a Master of Arts degree from Oxford University. Dorothy was a devoted educator, first at the Lurgan College preparatory school for 14 years and then at the Shipley School in Bryn Mawr, PA, for another 24 years. She was well known for her deep knowledge of James Joyce, prodigious knitting, as well as the capacity to make vats of orange marmalade. Per her wishes, a simple internment will be held at St. Christopher’s Episcopal Church in Gladwyne, PA. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Shipley School.
