Donald A. Wood OBITUARY

Donald A. Wood died peacefully on March 14, 2024 surrounded by his wife and family. He and his loving wife, Nancy Oiler Wood, celebrated 65 years of marriage on October 18, 2023. He was born on December 28, 1936, son of the late Elizabeth Harsch Wood and James D.I. Wood, and was a lifelong resident of Wayne, PA. Don is survived by 4 children: Suzan Andrews (Chris) of Bethlehem, PA, Connie Wolf (Matthew) of Cherry Hill, NJ, Dave Wood (Maya van Rossum) of Bryn Mawr, PA and Barbara Messaros (Steve) of West Chester, PA. He was predeceased by a son, Scott Allan Wood, who died shortly after birth. He treasured his time with sixteen grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Don graduated from Lehigh University with a B.S. in Electrical Engineering (1958), an M.S. in Education from University of Pennsylvania (1962), an A.A.S. in Fire Science Technology from Delaware Community College (1981), and an M.S. in Human Organization Science (1991). While studying electrical engineering at Lehigh University, Don decided teaching was his passion. After beginning his teaching career at Springfield and Upper Merion High Schools, he taught Physics at Radnor High School for 30 years. Don was a lifelong learner continually expanding his areas of expertise. He was an active fireman with Radnor Fire Company for 62 years, starting at age 15 as a “School Boy Fireman.” He wore many hats for the Company, serving as Ambulance Committee Chairman, EMS Manager, Treasurer, Safety Officer, Second and Third Assistant Chief and 3 separate terms as Fire Chief. Don also served as the Fire Marshal for Radnor Township for 22 years. One of Don’s biggest fire service prides was teaching and developing course curriculum at the National Fire Academy in Emmitsburg, MD for 32 years. He continued to enjoy visits with his friends at the firehouse until his death. Don was a devoted member of St. Luke Lutheran Church in Devon, joining in 1958. Memorial Service will be held on March 21 at 11:00 AM at St Luke Lutheran Church in Devon. Visitation will begin at 10:00 AM at the church.
