NORRISTOWN — A man was fatally struck by a vehicle Tuesday morning in Norristown, authorities announced late Tuesday afternoon.
Crews from Norristown’s police and fire departments were dispatched around 11:48 a.m. to a “struck pedestrian call” at the intersection of West Main and Stanbridge streets to find a person unresponsive lying in the road. The vehicle involved and the driver also remained on the scene, according to municipal officials.
While details surrounding the incident were limited, the driver of the vehicle who officials in a statement described as an elderly male who “appeared to have suffered a medical emergency while driving westbound on West Main Street and struck the pedestrian as he crossed within a marked crosswalk.”
Emergency medical services personnel also attempted life-saving measures on the pedestrian, Norristown officials said. Both parties were then transferred to Jefferson Einstein Montgomery Hospital in East Norriton Township where the pedestrian was pronounced deceased at 12:51 p.m.
The driver also received medical treatment.
The intersection was closed for roughly three hours, according to Norristown Police Department Capt. Michael Bishop.
An investigation is expected in a joint effort between the Norristown Police Department and Montgomery County Detective Bureau, which responds to all fatal traffic accidents. While it’s unclear what will come from that inquiry, Bishop called the incident a “tragic accident.”
The victim’s identity has not yet been released, as the Montgomery County Coroner’s Office needs to conduct an autopsy and notify his next-of-kin, Montgomery County Coroner Dr. Janine Darby told MediaNews Group on Tuesday afternoon.
