A portion of Route 202 in Montgomery County in Upper Merion Township, just north of the King of Prussia Mall, has been closed due to a sinkhole.

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation announced Thursday, Dec. 14, that the northbound lanes of Route 202, also known as Dekalb Pike, are closed between Henderson Road and Saulin Boulevard due to the sinkhole.

“During the closure, motorists will be directed to use Henderson Road and Saulin Boulevard,” PennDOT stated. “Local access will be maintained up to the closure.

“Drivers are advised to allow extra time when traveling near the work area because backups and delays will occur.”

PennDOT says that portion of Route 202 will be closed until its engineers can assess the new damage and develop a repair plan.

Several portions of Route 202 in the area have been closed due to sinkholes this year. In July, the same portion was closed Monday evening, July 10, when a sinkhole opened up. PennDOT determined that sinkhole happened due to pavement failure.

A portion involving just the northbound lanes was shut down again several days later, with PennDOT saying heavy rains contributed to the sinkhole reopening.

On Aug. 22, a section of Route 202 in Springfield Township, known as the Bethlehem Pike was shutdown due to another sinkhole opening.
