Many people have an outdated idea of what life is like in senior living communities.
To dispel the stereotypes associated with retirement living (i.e., it’s boring and the food is bad), The Heritage of Green Hills in Cumru Township, Berks County, threw open its doors in April and invited the public to enjoy a sampling of the types of fun activities its senior residents enjoy every day.
The “A Day at the Heritage of Green Hills” Open House was packed with demonstrations, classes, tours and delicious chef-made meals that exemplify the community’s “Live it Up Lifestyle.” Visitors also had the opportunity to meet residents, staff and healthcare partners and explore the community’s resort-style amenities.
“At the Heritage, we foster physical and emotional wellness, creativity, curiosity and vitality through fun and engaging programming every day,” said Executive Director Doug Walther. “It was exciting to share our wellness-focused lifestyle with our neighbors. It’s a wonderful opportunity for seniors and their adult children to experience how much fun senior living can be.”
Attendees at the day-long event enjoyed a light and healthy buffet breakfast in the community’s restaurant, The Brandywine, followed by a gentle, seated strengthening workout with one of the community’s most popular trainers in the exercise studio.
Later, the Woodworking Committee hosted a demo in the Heritage’s well-equipped woodshop. A friendly water volleyball tournament made waves in the pool, and budding and experienced artists sketched in the art studio.
Guests were also invited to tour the community’s spacious independent living model apartments, enjoy brain fitness activities and check out the impressive layout of the model train room — which is usually only open to the public during the holidays.
Attendees enjoyed a friendly lunch with current residents before they were taken on a tour of the Heritage’s award-winning and state-of-the-art care center, which is home to Heritage’s Personal Care and Memory Care neighborhoods.
