WEST NORRITON — A Pennbrook Middle School student who was accused last week of assaulting a fellow student with a Stanley tumbler may face new charges, after allegedly attempting to strike a sheriff’s deputy with a large water jug during a Montgomery County juvenile court hearing Monday morning.
The 13-year-old student made national headlines last week, following reporting on an alleged assault that had occurred in the North Penn school’s cafeteria and resulted in the 12-year-old victim being hospitalized. The attack, which police described as sudden and unprovoked, resulted in the victim sustaining a concussion and needing staples to close head lacerations.
The alleged assailant, who is being held at the Montgomery County Youth Center, was in court on Monday morning on charges of felony aggravated assault and related offenses. According to Upper Gwynedd Police Chief David Duffy, the hearing was held at 10 a.m., and upon the judge detaining the juvenile, the juvenile allegedly grabbed a large water jug and swung it at deputies.
“The juvenile continued to resist but was subdued,” said Duffy, adding he’s not sure if additional charges will be filed as a result of the attempted assault in court.
The juvenile is currently in custody at the Youth Center and will undergo an evaluation in approximately one week to determine if the stay at the center will be longer, Duffy said.
District officials have since vowed to make numerous changes to district school safety policies and procedures, including safety committees at each school, vowed an outside investigation into the April 17 assault, and shared resources for parents on how to talk to students about the incident.
