BRIDGEPORT — Bridgeport Borough Council announced that Bridgeport Borough Spring Cleanup Day is set for April 24. Volunteers, who will move through the streets collecting trash, are asked to please wear masks and meet at the Borough parking at 10 a.m. Bags and gloves will be provided.

Joseph Catagnus was sworn in as a fire police officer by Mayor Mark Barbee.

Chief Todd Bereda noted that Catagnus was a “25 year-plus veteran of the fire services, a (code) official fire marshal for East Norriton township and a member of two fire companies in Norristown Borough and we’re lucky to have him to help us out in Bridgeport.”

Council unanimously approved a resolution authorizing Bridgeport to become a member of the Keystone Municipal Insurance Trust for workers compensation insurance coverage.

“Our insurance policies renew in the late March, early April vicinity of every year,” said Borough Manager Keith Truman, who added that seeking out the best rate for the Borough is “one of the ways that we try to save the municipality money, while ensuring that our varying coverages meet our needs. Through our insurance broker Brown & Brown we’ve been able to gain entrance to the Keystone Municipal Insurance Trust .”

Truman noted that it was an exclusive membership that not every municipality is able to attain.

In conjunction with the Keystone Municipal Insurance Trust agreement, council approved adopting the company’s policy of pre-employment Hepatitis C screenings for applicable emergency service employees and volunteers.

Chief Bereda thanked the Pennsylvania State Police for the department’s assistance in getting drivers to slow down on the DeKalb Street corridor.

He urged everyone to take care driving, with children being outside in warmer weather.

Bereda said a church leadership summit made up of the clergy from Bridgeport, Upper Merion and Norristown would be held on Friday “to talk about how to help each other and members of the community.”

Truman announced that the deadline for applications for the annual Dr. Vincent Miraglia Scholarship program is May 6.

The scholarships are open to any new high school graduate or non-traditional student who has lived in Bridgeport for at least two years.

Copies of the application are available at Borough Hall, 53 W. Fourth St., and on the website, bridgeportborough.org.
