LOWER MERION – The Pennsylvania Horticultural Society’s (PHS) Tree Tenders program recently planted 60 trees with the help of Lower Merion Township staff and dozens of volunteers.
The Ardmore Progressive Civic Association and Friends of Rolling Hill Park provided additional support for plantings. The Merion Civic Association, Botanical Society of Lower Merion, Penn Valley Civic Association, Friends of the Cynwyd Heritage Trail, and the Neighborhood Club of Bala Cynwyd also helped. The planting took place between April 19 and 21.
The Pennsylvania Horticultural Society’s Tree Tenders program works with volunteer-based community groups yearly to plant and care for thousands of trees throughout the Greater Philadelphia region.
The PHS Tree Tenders groups and the Township Shade Tree Division are planning to plant more trees this fall. Residents who would like to be considered for a township or PHS tree are encouraged to complete the Tree Request Form at www.lowermerion.org/requestatree.
Tree canopy is an often-overlooked contributor to better environmental, economic, human health, and quality of life outcomes. It is critical that new trees be planted regularly to compensate for losses in local tree populations due to tree aging, pestilence, damage, and removal from development sites. With the help of Lower Merion Township staff and dedicated volunteers, the township was able to plant trees at significant cost savings to provide these benefits to residents.
