GRATERFORD — A 33-year-old inmate died early Monday morning inside State Correctional Institution at Phoenix, a Pennsylvania Department of Corrections spokesperson said on Tuesday.

SCI Phoenix Superintendent Joseph Terra reported the incident involving the inmate, Martin McLoughlin, who was “found unresponsive in his cell.” A state corrections department spokesperson added that “prison staff immediately responded and provided life-saving measures until facility medical personnel arrived,” but Mcloughlin was pronounced dead at 6:22 a.m.

The circumstances leading up to McLoughlin’s death were unclear, but an investigation is expected from the Pennsylvania State Police, according to a corrections spokesperson. McLoughlin came to the Graterford-based prison in July 2023, serving an 8-to-22-year aggravated assault with serious bodily injury conviction out of Bucks County.

While McLoughlin’s next-of-kin has been notified, his cause and manner of death has not yet been released by the Montgomery County Coroner’s Office.
