LOWER MERION – A driver is in serious condition following a crash early Monday on the 300 block of Montgomery Avenue in Lower Merion.
According to police, at 3:30 a.m. the driver of a Volkswagen Tiguan SUV was traveling west on Montgomery Avenue when the vehicle crashed into an unoccupied car parked on the south side of Montgomery Avenue.
The Tiguan caught fire upon impact, trapping the driver inside, police said.
Crews from the Lower Merion Fire Department responded and got the driver out of the car.
The driver sustained life-threatening injuries and was transported to Lankenau Hospital by Narberth Ambulance. He was later airlifted to Jefferson Hospital for additional treatment.
As of late Monday morning, the driver remained in critical condition.
Montgomery Avenue was closed for about four hours. The crash remains under investigation by the police department’s traffic safety unit.
